WTA champions of the first week

The first week of the WTA tour has passed and there were 2 familiar champions. Although in the case of Victoria Azarenka it took her a while since her last title in 2013. Azarenka completed a revival that had seen her storm to her first title in almost 2,5 year without losing a set. Her victory at the Brisbane international couldn’t have come at a better time, with her favorite grand slam tournament -the Australian open- just around the corner.

After 3 brilliant seasons in which she ended the year end rankings at number 3 (2011), number 1 (2012) and number 2 in 2013, the injury bug had bitten Azarenka very hard. She was limited to just 9 tournaments in 2014 and 14 in 2015 leading to a ranking that dropped to as low as number 50 in the world. Her lowest ranking in over 8 years.

Azarenka who beat Angelique Kerber in the final with a convincing 6-3 – 6-1, is guaranteed a top 16 ranking when the Australian open starts within 5 days. Reaching her highest ranking since august 2014 and hoping her rise back to the top echelon of the tennis world will continue at the Australian open.

Azarenka said; “The focus is still very much on Melbourne. I’m going to do everything I can to prepare and feel the most comfortable to start the tournament. I can’t wait to be in Melbourne. I love the city.”

Radwanska adds another trophy
Agnieszka Radwanska won her 18th WTA title of her career at the Shenzhen open, just days after securing a top 4 seed at the Australian open with a victory in the Shenzen semi-finals. By reaching the final, Radwanska passed Maria Shaprapova for number 4. And if that wasn’t enough the number 1 seeded player played a great match, overwhelming Alison Riske in the final with a 6-3 – 6-2 victory.

Radwanska said; “My serve really helped me today. Also in the deciding points I was a little bit better, and I think that’s why the score was the way it was – it made it look easier than the actual match was.” Radwanska is 22-4 since the U.S. open and picked up titles at Tokyo, Tianjin and the WTA finals along the way.
