The Roland Garros grand slam tournament 2016 will be played from sunday 16th may – sunday 5th june. It will be the 115th championships at the French penpen and the second grandslam tournament of the year. At the Stade Roland Garros there will be played in the men’s and women’s singles, the men’s and ladies doubles and of course the mixed doubles. Also weelchair tennis and the future stars of the tennis tour will be present.
Defending men’s champion will be Stanislas Warinka of Switzerland while Serena Williams will be defending her women’s title. Rafael Nadal was the five-time defending champion in the men’s singles 2015, but lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarter finals. Stan Wawrinka eventually won his first French open title, defeating Djokovic in the final. Maria Sharapova was the defending champion in the women’s singles 2015, but lost to Lucie Šafářová in the fourth round. Serena Williams eventually defeated Šafářová in the final and won her third French open title, 20th Grand Slam Singles title, and third career grand slam.
The tournament on the slow clay of Paris will be a guarantee for long- and amazing rallies. Roland Garros is therefore generally considered the toughest tournament on the professional circuit these days. The French open has two main show courts: Court Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen Court. The finals will be contested on the Court Philippe Chatrier.
