ATP champions of the first week

The first week of the 2016 ATP tennis season has passed and also the first week of my blog. It took me a while to get it up and running but really looking forward to blogging, blogging, blogging, blogging and… blogging. My main goal for 2016 is working towards a blog + webshop where you find news, reviews, gear etc. but also my own tennis-related “art” like posters, cards, sweaters, shirts, wallpapers and tennis cans. Although this will probably take me a few months, right now my main focus will be trying to produce as much content as possible.

Back to the stars of the first week, Novak Djokovic started the season the way he ended the 2015 season with breathtaking tennis and routing Rafael Nadal in the Doha final. Stan Wawrinka proved once again that he really loves the Chennai tournament with a fourth title overall and Milos Raonic -the best dressed player on the circuit this week- defeated Roger Federer in the 2016 Brisbane final.

Ruthless Djokovic claims 60th title
Novak Djokovic made sure the only blip on his brilliant 2015 resume was a distant memory, beating Rafael Nadal with a very convincing 6-1 and 6-2 victory at the Doha tennis tournament. Djokovic easily erased memories of a quarter final defeat by Karlovic last year and captured his sixth consecutive title. It was Djokovic’s 60th overall and he became just the 10th player in the open era to reach this number, drawing level with Andre Agassi.

Djokovic playing the best tennis of his life was quoted saying; “I haven’t dropped a set the entire week. And when it was most needed against one of my biggest rivals, I managed to play the best tennis in a match where I had to fight for the trophy. So it does give me a great deal of confidence for the rest of the season.”

Sweet revenge for Milos Raonic in Brisbane final
There was sweet revenge for Milos Raonic on sunday in the final of the Brisbane international as he defeated Roger Federer quite easily with a 6-4 – 6-4 victory to capture his 8th title.
Last year it was the Swiss maestro who won the Brisbane title when the pair met in the final, earning his 1000th match win on the way. Raonic although made a strong statement at the start of the 2016 season with his victory, which saw his overall record improve to 2-9 against Federer.

Raonic said; “It feels great considering how the past nine months have been. It adds a sort of cherry on top to all that. For myself it signifies within the team how good the work we are doing is.”

Wawrinka wins 4th title in Chennai
Winning a title during the first week of the season is a very special feeling, for Stan Wawrinka it is more like a tradition. The world number 4 from Switzerland won his 4th Chennai title in 5 years by beating Croatia’s Borna Coric with a convincing 6-3 – 7-5 victory. Wawrinka extended his impressive run in India to a 12-match winning streak and became the first player in Chennai’s history to complete a three-peat.

Wawrinka said; “I’m really happy to win the match the way I played today against Coric. Again it was in two sets as it has been all tournament. The crowd was amazing, their support is fantastic every year.”
